Moldavite is a tektite—natural glass forged approximately 15 million years ago when a meteorite struck what is now southern Germany, launching molten earth skyward to cool and fall across the Vltava River valley in the Czech Republic. Composed primarily of silica with traces of aluminum, iron, and magnesium, it appears as translucent forest-green glass etched with branching "splash marks" from its rapid descent. This is not a crystal formed slowly in the earth's patient darkness. This is a collision made solid, the moment of impact frozen in glass.
