Amethyst is a variety of Quartz found in many locations around the world. It owes its purple colour to the presence of iron traces within the Quartz and from natural irradiation. The most common form of Amethyst is that which forms druzy crystals that outline cavities, known as geodes which form most commonly in Basalt (volcanic rock); they are largely found in Brazil and Uruguay.
Amethyst exhibits a hardness of 7 on the Mohs’ Scale.
It is not recommended that Amethyst is exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as this can slowly fade the colour.
